Melbourne rides the night

Melbourne is renowned for having four seasons in one day, but Saturday night/Sunday morning it seemed there was only one—the wet season. Despite this, more than 2000 excited riders rolled out for the city’s newest night time event for bike riders—Ride the Night—with the aim of raising money for YSAS to help break the cycle of youth drug addiction. After months of preparation, CyclingTips has launched its sister site, Ella—an online hub for women’s cycling. Editor Jessi Braveman is excited about the site’s potential, writing: “My goal as editor … is to share with you the many, varied reasons there are to love cycling. Rider numbers on the rise in London

Transport for London has released new data showing that bikes now make up one sixth of traffic in central London, with that figure expected to continue rising steadily. Mayor Boris Johnson, who recently released plans for two new cycling superhighways, said these numbers support the case for investing in bike infrastructure: “These amazing numbers show how cyclists are becoming ubiquitous in London and prove, if further proof were needed, why we need to crack on with catering for them.”

US state considers mandatory hi-viz for cyclists

Wyoming legislators are seeking to pass a bill that would require cyclists to carry government issued identification and don at least 200 square inches “of high-visibility fluorescent orange, green or pink colour clothing visible from the front and rear of the bicycle.” Local cycling advocates are unimpressed by the bill, with Wyoming Pathways Executive Director Tim Young explaining: “Generally speaking, this is an inappropriate way to look at bike legislation in Wyoming.”

Bikes have the rule of the road, at least according to Amazon. Currently topping the best sellers list in the Kindle automotive category is Carlton Reid’s cycling history book, Roads Were Not Built for Cars. It’s also the number one Kindle book on amazon.co.uk.
