Australia’s top 50 bike-friendly cafes

Margot McGovern finds the nation’s best spots for a post-ride pick-me-up.

6. Rapha Cycle Club Sydney
6. Rapha Cycle Club Sydney

For two-wheeled coffee drinkers, there is little more rewarding or rejuvenating than that first sip of your latte or long mac after an even longer ride. However, great coffee alone usually isn’t enough for a café to draw a regular crowd of riders. So we put the question to Ride On readers: what makes a cafe bike-friendly?

Unsurprisingly, bike parking, and friendly service were near the top of the list, as were free water bottle refills and cleat-resistant floors. Road riders appreciated early opening times and room enough to accommodate the whole peloton—extra points if the café splits the bill. Commuters wanted chic, inner-city hubs, single roasts and speedy service, while recreational riders and tourers craved shady courtyards, access to trails and a decent selection of sweet treats to accompany their bean brew.

Australia has a rich café culture with thousands of bean bars dotted across the nation. We were determined to find those select few that meet your criteria of a great bike-friendly café. So here they are, as voted by you, in alphabetical order by state, Australia’s top 50 bike-friendly cafes.

  1. Have to include Amberlight Cafe in Lobethal, SA. They put cool water out for the cyclists in summer, provide fire warnings and there are plenty of chairs outside for sweaty cyclists.

  2. +1 for The Altar at Willunga. A top spot to see the peloton launch themselves up Old Willunga Hill during the TDU also

  3. And Espresso House, Windsor. Great coffee. Yummy healthy snacks. Excellent service. Great position just off the bike path on Kedron Brook. And did I say great coffee!

    1. Only if you get to lonsdale St roasters early. A distinct lack of available seating turns most of our peloton away from there. Coffee is good though!

  4. Bit disappointed that Gove’s in Ballarat didn’t get a mention as it’s a cafe that has been voted as one of Ballarat’s best and it happens to be inside a Bike shop.

  5. 5 from NSW
    7 from QLD
    5 from WA
    22 from VIC

clearly Victorians either spend far too much time drinking coffee or on the web talking about it……

Get out and ride you Mexicans !!!!

  6. I think GG’s and Millie’s Bakery both on Stuart Rd Dulwich deserve a mention as they both serve consistently excellent coffee and both have very helpful friendly staff. The ambience is nice as they are in the neighbourhood rather than on a busy thoroughfare. Both also have indoor and outdoor seating.

    1. Sorry should have stated Dulwich, Adelaide, SA, for those of you who haven’t experienced the joys of cycling in this cycling mecca.

  7. Not a bad read, but I have to admit that I got a bit annoyed after a while – there’s only so many times you can say somewhere offers ‘some of the best coffee in [city]’.

  8. We’re doing our best here at oranje tractor wine cellar door and cafe in Albany WA to be cycle friendly. We are accredited as a cycle friendly cafe by the Mounda Biddi Trail Foundation which means we have sculptural bike rack (one of our bike racks won the best bike rack in regional wa), free water for cyclists, high carb meals, rest areas and toilets. But we decided to go further. Cyclists can have a free shower, get to pick a handful of free produce (avocado or plums at the moment) we have a bike repair stand with 12 tools a nd a pump that can be used free of charge, free vintage trike use for kids and we have a collection of vintage bikes on display. we also have a second label called Fat Tyre with proceeds of sales of the Gear Masher Merlot, Panic Skid Pinot and Bespoke (Sparkling S Blanc) going to the Albany MTB club to build trails.

  9. The Bavaria and Nino’s in Victor Harbor, the Retro in Pt Elliot and the Heritage Bakery in Goolwa are popular with the South Coast cyclists.
