Aussie Pro Simon Clarke To Retire, But Not Just Yet

Veteran Aussie professional rider Simon Clarke has announced his retirement from the top level of the sport, but it’s not all bad news.
After 17 years racing the pro peloton, Clarke will bow out after the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in January 2026, meaning he will also be available to ride his final Santos Tour Down Under.
Taking to social media on Monday night Australian time, Clarke – who’s currently racing the Giro d’Italia with his Israel Premier Tech team – explained that it’s time to wrap up his phenomenal career.
“It’s hard to put into words what this sport has meant to me,” Clarke wrote. “I left Australia at just 16 years old with a dream to make it in Europe as a cyclist. I had no guarantees, just a deep love for the sport and a determination to chase something bigger.
“That decision changed my life. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of racing on the world’s biggest stages, standing on podiums, supporting teammates, and being part of some truly special moments in the sport. I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved. Not just the results, but the relationships, experiences, and lessons along the way.
“In 2011, I met my wonderful wife, a moment that has defined my life even more than any race. Together, we now have two amazing children, and as I look ahead, l’m excited for more time with them and for whatever the next chapter brings.

“Cycling has given me so much, and I’ll always be grateful for the journey,” continued Clarke.
“There’s no better way to close this chapter than racing at home, in front of family, friends, and Aussie fans who’ve supported me from the very beginning so I’m excited to share that my final races as a professional will be the Tour Down Under and Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race next January with IPT.
“Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this ride – my family, friends, teams, fans, and fellow riders. I’m stepping away from racing, but my passion for the sport remains as strong as ever and I’ll announce my future plans in due course,” he concluded.
Ride On magazine and all at Bicycle Network wish Simon Clarke the very best for the rest of this year, the start of 2026, and his exciting future as an ex-professional. Thanks for the wonderful memories and we hope you leave us with a few more Clarkey!
