Bayswater students get ACTIVE

Students at Bayswater West Primary School in Melbourne are riding, walking, skating and scooting into a healthier future thanks to the launch of Ride2School’s ACTIVEMaps. Developed by Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program, the ACTIVEMaps initiative encourages school communities to adopt healthy habits by identifying suitable riding and walking routes to school.

Tassie councils urge return of grants program

Northern Midlands Council has joined the push, headed by Bicycle Network Tasmania, to urge the Tasmanian State Government to reinstate its Trails and Bikeways Grants Program. The return of the program is already supported by a number of councils around the state, including Hobart City Council, as the program is an important resource for planning and building bike infrastructure and provides a transparent, competitive process for deciding which councils get funding.

Barcelona embraces ebikesNEWS-bicing-eletric-xavier-trias

Following the overwhelmingly successful launch of a pilot fleet of public ebikes in December, Barcelona is expanding the fleet to include  300 ebikes available at 46 stations. The city has also offered bikeshare memberships to the 2500 people on the waiting list. Given the popularity of the ebike fleet, the city has plans to expand the system further, and within a week of announcing a new waiting list more than 300 people had signed up.

California considers mandatory helmet law

The state of California already requires children under 18 to wear a helmet when riding a bike, and now Senator Carol Liu has presented a bill to make helmets mandatory for adult riders as well. Of the bill Senator Liu explained: “This law will help protect more people and make sure all riders benefit from the head protection that a helmet provides.” If the bill were to pass, California would become the first American state to make helmets compulsory for adult riders.

Armstrong fined $10 million

Disgraced cyclist, Lance Armstrong, has been ordered to pay a $10 million penalty to SCA Promotions, the sports insurance company that paid Armstrong’s bonuses for winning the Tour de France, after he was found guilty of perjury for stating under oath that he didn’t use illegal performance enhancing substances during his cycling career. The penalty is believed to be the largest of its kind brought against an individual in American judicial history.
