Cervélo’s New R5: The World’s Lightest Production Road Bike
Cervélo has unveiled the latest generation R5, a bike the company claims is the lightest production model available.
A staple in the brand’s history, the R5 has been part of Cervélo’s story for more than two decades—ranging from the pioneering R5CA project to Wout van Aert’s winning ride on Mont Ventoux. Most recently, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot rode the new R5 to victory at this year’s Tour de France Femmes, underlining its place at the highest levels of WorldTour cycling.
Weight and Performance
The new R5 in a size 56 comes in at just 5.97kg, nearly 900 grams under the UCI’s minimum weight limit of 6.8kg. The frame alone weighs 651 grams, with a fork at 298 grams. Cervélo say that beyond the 100g reduction in frame and fork, refinements across every component account for a total weight savings of 326g.

While lightness is a clear headline, Cervélo say stiffness and handling haven’t been compromised. Its geometry remains close to the previous generation, with a slight change to bottom bracket drop to accommodate 29mm tires. Fit geometry has been revised to align with the S5, giving riders a stronger position whether they switch between models, as Team Visma | Lease a Bike does.
Key Design Updates
One-Piece Handlebar and Stem
A redesigned HB18 one-piece bar and stem contributes nearly 150 grams of weight savings, while also delivering a two-watt aerodynamic gain compared to the previous R5. Drawing from developments on the S5, Cervélo shaped the handlebar for comfort, stiffness, and compliance with the latest UCI regulations. Available in 15 size combinations, this system underscores the importance of fit. Customers purchasing through an Authorized Cervélo Retailer can work with staff to determine the right setup at no additional cost.

Reserve 34 | 37 SL Wheelset
The new Reserve 34 | 37 SL wheelset, developed specifically for the R5, shaves a further 60 grams. Adjustments to the layup help maintain durability while trimming excess weight.
