The 2025 Vuelta a España ended in unprecedented circumstances – the final stage in Madrid abandoned after thousands of protesters flooded the course forcing organisers to cancel the race with 58 kilometres to go.

Overall leader Jonas Vingegaard was confirmed the winner, with Jai Hindley the best-placed Australian rider finishing 4th and Jay Vine winning the Polka Dot jersey.

However, the planned sprint finish and podium ceremony were cancelled after police and organisers deemed the situation unsafe. Instead, the final podium was makeshift – Grand Tour winners standing on hastily organised cold boxes in a parking lot – it looked more like a club championship.

“For security reasons, stage 21 of La Vuelta has been ended early. There will be no podium ceremony,” read the official statement.

Protestors Storm Finishing Circuit

Spanish authorities estimated that more than 100,000 people attended pro-Palestinian rallies across the capital, with around 3,000 directly obstructing the race route on Sunday.

Riot police clashed with demonstrators near Gran Vía and Plaza de Colón, firing teargas after barriers were pushed aside and bottles thrown. It was the largest security operation in Madrid since the 2022 NATO summit, but – like much of the three-week race – the final stage was completely disrupted.

Stage 11 in Bilbao ended without a winner after demonstrators blocked the finish line less than three kilometres from the end. Several other stages, including a time trial, were delayed or diverted. Much of the protest activity was directed towards the Israel-Premier Tech team, whose presence in the race became a focal point of demonstrations.

The cancellation of the Madrid finale drew frustration from riders and teams, who argued that weeks of effort had been undermined.

Several riders voiced anger that the protests achieved little beyond disrupting the race.

The last Grand Tour of the calendar, the abandonment has raised serious concerns about the future of cycling’s marquee events. Organisers now face questions about whether similar protests could affect the 2026 Giro d’Italia and indeed the next Tour de France …. scheduled to start in Barcelona.
