With more than 30 years of tradition, the United Energy Around the Bay returns on Sunday 26 October, promising to once again stop Melbourne – and maybe reignite a few friendly sporting rivalries along the way.

Launched this week at Albert Park, the event brought together cycling royalty and AFL legends, unveiling the vibrant new event jersey that symbolises energy, connection, and the diversity of Melbourne’s riding community.

Leading the charge were Tour de France stage winner Simon Gerrans and world-class cyclist Sarah Gigante, who will soon head to Europe for her professional campaign. For Gerrans, this event holds personal significance – it was his initial springboard into the world of elite cycling.

The race for bragging rights started early, as former AFL stars Alex Fasolo (ex-Collingwood and Carlton) and Ed Curnow (ex-Carlton) reignited old rivalries on two wheels. And Curnow didn’t miss a beat…

“I’m surprised Alex does that much exercise, we couldn’t get him to training during his footy days,” he joked at the Albert Park launch.

Fasolo fired back by saying “It’s on! Lap the track is five kilometres, and while something tells me Ed’s in better nick than I am, I reckon we can do this. I’ll just need some coaching from Sarah or Simon.”

Beyond the friendly jibes, Fasolo, now working in strategy with United Energy, highlighted the deeper value of the company’s partnership.

“We’ve supported this ride for many years because it’s about getting people active, healthy, and connected,” he told pro cycling commentator Matthew Keenan. “Every year, over 100 of our employees take part, and I expect 2025 will be no different.”

A Celebration of Community, Cycling, and Purpose

Returning on a new date – Sunday 26 October 2025 – the United Energy Around the Bay offers six ride options, catering to riders of all ages and abilities. From the Lap the Track family ride at Albert Park to the iconic 220km loop of Port Phillip Bay, there’s a ride option for everyone.

Alison McCormack, Bicycle Network CEO, said the event continues to embody Melbourne’s vibrant cycling culture.

“Around the Bay has been running for more than 30 years and is the ultimate bike-based celebration of Melbourne and the Bay,” she told Ride On. “Whether you’re taking on 5km or 220km, it’s a day for everyone to experience the joy of riding.”

Simon Gerrans, owner of Hendry’s Cycling said it was wonderful to see Geelong play such a key role.

“The 135km Geelong start showcases some of Victoria’s best riding and connects regional and metro riders in a shared celebration,” said the road cycling legend. “This was my first mass participation event as a teenager – now my family rides it too.”

Pro rider Sarah Gigante was at the launch, the popular powerhouse echoing the sentiment.

“United Energy Around the Bay is a celebration of everything we love about cycling in Melbourne,” she said. “Whether you’re riding 5km or 220km, you feel part of something special. I’ve watched my mum, cousins, and uncles ride it and I hope to be back for the 26th, depending on my racing schedule.”

Riding for a Cause: Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision

The event also continues its vital partnership with Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, with riders encouraged to fundraise as part of their challenge.

Nick Riewoldt, Maddie’s brother and co-founder, said the popular annual ride held an extra special significance.

“This ride isn’t just about the challenge, it’s about coming together to make real change for those impacted by Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes,” he said. “We’re honoured to partner with a community that rides with such purpose.”

Amy Coote, CEO of Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, said the major event is key to critical fundraising.

“As Maddie’s Vision celebrates 10 years of impact, we’re incredibly grateful for the partnerships that make this journey possible,” she said. “United Energy Around the Bay is a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts and helps drive critical research and support services.”

A Ride for Everyone

The 2025 United Energy Around the Bay is more than a ride – it’s a celebration of community, inclusion, and the joy of cycling. It’s not a race; it’s a ritual, reflecting what it means to ride in Melbourne.

With early bird entries now open, riders can enjoy bonuses like a FREE event jersey for 100km ride options and above, and kids under 15 ride free in the 50km and Lap the Track events.

Scott Russell, United Energy General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Customer and Strategy, summed it up perfectly.

“United Energy is proud to continue powering this iconic ride,” he said. “It brings our communities together, promotes healthy lifestyles, and supports vital causes like Maddie’s Vision – while highlighting the stunning ride around Port Phillip Bay.”
