Cheer on the Tour!
It’s been an exciting week of racing in Adelaide and it’s not over yet! Geraint Thomas of the UK’s Team SKY is dominating the Tour Down Under, topping the leader board for the Jayco Sprint Jersey, the Skoda King of the Mountain Jersey and the General Classification after his epic Stage Two win. Today, Stage Four of the race heads to Tanunda after the Bupa Challenge Tour this morning.
La Trobe lanes launched
Work on Melbourne CBD’s biggest bike infrastructure project for 2013 is set to begin Tuesday, with a separated east-west bike lane running from Victoria to Spencer Street being installed on La Trobe Street.
Bicentennial Bikeway face lift
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has unveiled plans to make the city’s Bicentennial Bikeway more attractive to riders in an effort to encourage more active transport. There will be several information booths set up along the path, as well as a juice bar, cafe and rest area beneath the Coronation Drive overpass.
International news
London explores separate path
Transport for London has impressed bike riders with plans for a new bike superhighway including 2.4km of separated lanes, which will make inner-city commuting safer and more efficient. However, for the project to get the green light, they need support from the city’s riders.
Dublin keen to ride
Ireland’s National Sustainable Transport Policy has plans to reduce car traffic by 40-45% and have 10% of all trips made by bike by 2020. As an early step in the process they have surveyed Dublin residents to learn what infrastructure would most encourage more riders.
McQuaid steps down from International Olympic Committee
UCI President Pat McQuaid has resigned from his position on the IOC. He says the move is the result of an overcrowded schedule, and indeed, he currently has his hands full with the ‘Lancegate’ scandal placing the UCI under scrutiny.
